In clothes we remember
This community project began with the idea that our clothes connect us to specific stories, people and memories. An item of clothing survives for years, collecting bits and pieces of these memories, weaving a silent story within its threads. Through interviews with community members and their donated garments, the memories contained within the cloth resurfaced. The garments were then deconstructed and pieced together into panels, layered with the art-making of community members - screen-printing, painting and embroidery - in order to tell a new story that exists in what became a permanent public art installation in the lobby of the Cary Arts Center.
